I have spent many hours drawing very detailed works with colored pencil with variable success. As you can see in the above drawing on the left, I would spend most of my time working on the subject and the background never would come together. Only as I started taking the whole piece as important did they seem to start working. Today I think in terms of tones and value, as I lay down large changes with charcoal in one hand and a eraser in the other. All that time and detail has been replaced with lost edges on surfaces that I have no control over. With the lost edges I allow the viewer to interact with the work, where they can decide the line for themselves.
